The elements of design remain the same whether creating functional or non-functional objects. The argument that form should follow function or function should follow form is more useful in theory than in reality. The experience of making furniture is a collaboration often filled with compromise. No two people see the balance of form and function in the same way. The designer who is not the craftsperson must rely on the aesthetic instincts of the builder. The designer/builder must often work within the framework of the customer’s specifications. The goal is to create pleasing and useful item from raw materials within a specific time frame.

For over twenty years Jennifer Gilbert has been making furniture. In that time a distinctive style has emerged. Clean lines and careful construction are the cornerstones of her aesthetic and, although she works in different techniques, this singular aesthetic is present.

The clean aesthetic can be seen in everything, from her own work, such as the Pullman chair and table, to her semi-custom drapery hardware line to the realization of other peoples designs, like the two custom-forged bed frames made for different interior designers. Design innovations that can be seen in her work include double topped tables and new ways of approaching pierced tin. Always, though, the clean lines and careful attention to detail are present.

Furniture and hardware require not just an aesthetic sense but also an understanding of their function. This is the challenge for the furniture maker. Ms. Gilbert meets this challenge.
