I read once, at least I think I did, that Frida Kahlo painted a
hummingbird necklace to symbolize the return of a lover. Maybe I made
that up. Hummingbirds have many symbolic meanings in many cultures
and birds in general signify freedom. I like that. I make these little birds from a small end cut of 3/8" square bar. They are made from one piece of iron. The cuff was made from a different end cut, but it's all from the same scrap pile. Anyway, I forged the hummingbird from a single piece of iron bar. I made the cuff and welded them together.
Iron will rust if it sits in water, but generally it is an amazingly durable and versatile metal. The oils in skin will protect it
and I've waxed it to add a layer of protection without changing look. If it ever develops a little rust spot,
oil or wax will take care of it. Iron is tough.
